If you live in a coastal area, there’s always driftwood to be found. Here’s how you can make a DIY driftwood tree topper for your Christmas tree!
In case you don’t know, we tend to like driftwood. We are a coastal oriented couple and driftwood is a big thing on our coast.
That’s why we’ve made our coffee table and the cupcake display at our wedding out of driftwood.
Being Christmas, we wanted to incorporate some driftwood into our holidays, so we decided to DIY a driftwood tree topper!
How to make a driftwood Christmas tree topper
Before you get started on making your driftwood Christmas tree topper, make sure you collect a bunch of pieces of driftwood and allow them time to fully dry out.
Then, grab a plastic ornament ball and some hot glue and you’re ready to get to work!
We’ve also made a DIY driftwood angel tree topper that looks more like the traditional angel on the tree!
Step one: Cut wood short
We started with a stack of driftwood collected from Folly Beach and sawed off a bunch of pieces so that they were roughly six inches long.
Then, we got a medium sized plastic ornament ball to attached the driftwood to with hot glue.
Step two: attach driftwood to ornament
Our plan was to take off the top of the ornament ball and turn it upside down to go over the top piece of wood on the tree.
Then, we were aiming to make a starburst by gluing the pieces of wood in different directions from the ball.
Apply a generous amount of hot glue to a spot on the ball and then hold the end of the driftwood onto the spot until it dries.
Repeat this in a random pattern all over the ornament so that it looks like a burst of driftwood. If you have leftovers, make a DIY driftwood starburst mirror that has the same effect all over the frame!
Step three: hang on the tree
Once it was all done, we gently rested it atop our tree!
The top of our (faux) tree fit perfectly inside the hole of the ornament. It’s actually very stable and secure up there.
The combination of the tree top going inside the ornament and the rest of the driftwood pieces sitting around the top of the tree keep it very stable in place.
This tree topper adds such a cute coastal look to our Christmas tree! It is a great little piece to go along with the vibe of our whole house.
We will be back tomorrow with our full tree reveal. Be sure to come back to check it out!
What do you typically put on top of your Christmas tree??
