Curtain Call!

If you don’t want sliding doors on your closet or the door opens into another door, you can use a decorative curtain to serve as the door. Here’s how!

Y’all might remember that when I first bought my condo, the master closets had sliding wooden doors. They looked sharp, but made it difficult to get to my clothing.

No matter how you slid it, you still couldn’t really get to the stuff in the middle.

This is the problem with accordion style double doors on a closet- you can never really access everything inside or see everything at once.

This is also often a problem for closets that have the doorway right next to the bathroom door and the doors open into each other or you can’t have them open at the same time. We had that at our next house, where we just removed the closet door completely to reveal a custom closet and added a barn door to the bathroom to solve the problems.

In this condo, we had two shallow closets opposing each other on the walkway to the bathroom and they were very difficult to access. So we decided to remove the doors completely and hang decorative curtains on rods to serve as the doors and give us complete access to everything.

Here’s how we did it!

How to use a curtain as a closet door

You can use a curtain on a closet door to serve as a decorative statement piece and for functionality.

Make sure that when choosing a curtain you select something that you are comfortable having large and on display. This will essentially serve as an art piece in your room.

Here are the simple steps to swap out closet doors for curtains.

Step one: remove closet door

The first thing you’ll need to do is remove the existing doors. This will depend on what type of door you have in place.

If you have a door on hinges, remove the hinge pins from the hinges and slide the door off. Then unscrew the hinges that are in the door frame.

If you have sliding closet doors like us, unscrew the hardware from the carpet that is keeping the doors in place and remove the doors from the tracks on the top of the frame by lifting the wheels off the track.

Once we did this, we then lived without closet doors for three months while we decided on the curtains.

We spent this time adding a DIY custom closet system using Kallax pieces and curtain rods that you can learn more about here.

Step two: hanging curtains

Sean had the great idea for me to hang curtains instead of doors. This would conceal some of the organized chaos while still allowing me 100% access to my clothing.

Recently, I was cruising a sale at UrbanOutfitters.com & spotted some curtains I really liked. They were on sale ($9.99 each!!) so I ordered 2 to try out.

It is worth noting that these were actually listed as shower curtains, but they are fabric so it didn’t matter to me.

They were super easy to install. I used 60″ adjustable curtain rods from Lowes along with Allen & Roth Clip Rings.

The rods were very easy to install. All I had to do was drill holes in the wall & screw in the brackets.

I used the drill to drill small holes in the wall & then screwed the brackets in using the drill. Unfortunately, the bracket made it slightly difficult to screw the screws in all the way, so I had to use the old fashioned screw driver for the last bit.

I hung the rod on the brackets just to give it a check.

Then, I attached the curtain to the clippy hangers. Shower curtains come standard with 12 hook holes but these clips all came in packs of 10.

I bought the clippy hangers to 1) add a little extra length to the curtain and 2) so I didn’t have to use the holes- I think this clips did a lot to make them look like curtains & not shower curtains! I just spaced the hooks out evenly over the curtain.

Then I slid the whole thing on the rod.

Ta-da!

I’m in love!!! I didn’t think these closets could get any better but my-oh-my! They perfectly conceal my unpainted closets (#lazy) & just make it look so nice! I can’t get over the delicate scallop of the pattern, either.

Heart, heart, heart.

If you’re keeping track, I also added a row of hooks to the back of my bathroom door. I’m trying to start planning my outfits the night before & this will help!

I am in love with my closet! But I’m still looking for a rug… I’m thinking white & fluffy!

How do you conceal your closets?
