Silvered Gray is another gray stain that I feel like is mis-named. I mean it sounds…. silver, right?
While silver is usually a cool toned gray, I found this stain to actually be pretty warm toned, with a lot of brown to it.
It’s a really nice mid-tone – not too light, not too dark. I really like the look on a lot of my wood samples!
Here is how Minwax Silvered Gray looked on each of six wood types!
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on oak?
Oak is a really beautiful wood with natural red undertones.
Silvered Gray complements oak well and gives it a light, rich, chocolate brown color.
It really is pretty and pairs well with oak, though I would say it is not at all gray!
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on pine?
Pine wood has natural yellow tones with some slightly darker graining.
Silvered Gray definitely leans into those warm undertones and makes the wood look like hershey kiss levels of chocolate.
Pretty, but not at all gray!
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on poplar?
Poplar has natural green and some purple undertones.
Poplar has little almost dashes it it’s wood grain which gives it the look of a lot of texture. This stain really highlights that!
I think that the green undertones of the poplar really do not favor this stain. It’s just not a winning combination in my book!
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on plywood?
Birch plywood is very light, almost white, with very light tan grain lines. It has beautiful flowing grain lines.
This plywood doesn’t usually read as too warm-toned, but I feel like the Silvered Gray really brought out the golden color in the grain. Whether that’s good or bad depends on your preferences!
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on a 2×4?
2x4s are usually very light wood with darker knots and holes.
You wouldn’t normally do much with 2x4s that requires stain, but for what it’s worth, I think that silvered gray suits 2x4s well. It has good coverage of the boring base wood, without being too dark.
How does Minwax Silvered Gray stain look on white wood?
White Wood is a soft, light colored wood with a lot of knots.
Silvered gray actually does pretty well on it, with even coverage and a nice warm brown color! It just really isn’t gray at all!
