Brainstorming ideas for how to celebrate St Patrick’s Day while social distancing? Here are some great ideas to keep the fun in this holiday while still staying safe!
It’s almost time for St Patrick’s Day again and could we really still be social distancing?
A year ago, this was unfathomable, but it’s still a reality for many, myself included.
I have a two year old and have been trying desperately to make holidays fun for him even while we are stuck at home.
We used to celebrate St Patrick’s Day by doing a big bar crawl down at Folly Beach (before kids).
I always looked forward to taking Luke to the parade and wearing silly green wigs and face paint and making the most of the day.
I don’t think there will be any parades this year, but I am still going to try to make it fun.
Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate St Patrick’s day while social distancing.
Ways to celebrate St Patrick’s Day while social distancing
Watch the parade – sort of!
No parade this year? No problem! Watch a parade from the past, like the famous New York City parade, on YouTube!
To be honest, watching a recorded parade isn’t much different from watching a live one on TV.
Drinking alone
Sure, you can pop a Guiness on your couch, but why not make it a little more special with one of these cocktails:
Special treats
Nothing gets me in (any) holiday spirit like baking special treats.
Here are some St Patrick’s Day baking ideas:
- Lucky charm bars (like rice krispy treats, but lucky charms)
- Homemade shamrock shakes
- Green velvet cheesecake
- Shamrock no-bake truffles
Take a green bath
This might be a bigger hit for the kiddos, but consider a green bath! Luke loves these bath fizzies and a blue+yellow tablet makes a perfect emerald green.
Adults might prefer a green bath bomb. Treat yourself!
Do some green tie dye
If you haven’t tie dyed yourself out yet, tie dye something green! You might want to do this in advance to get it ready in time for the holiday.
Scavenger hunt
Send your kids on a scavenger hunt around the house or neighborhood. Leave clues on papers cut out like shamrocks (bonus point if you can make the clue limericks).
Have a “pot of gold” (or green treats) waiting at the end!
Plant some greenery
This is a bit more abstract, but take this holiday as an excuse to “green” up your yard or porch. Plant a planter or refresh your yard for a fresh, green look.
Irish music
Ask your favorite music streaming device to play Irish music and dance a little jig in your living room.
Or, Ed Sheeran. You can only do what you can do.
Irish movies
Music not your thing? Watch an Irish movie! Or, movies set in Ireland.
- Brooklyn
- PS I Love You
- Leap Year
- The Wind that Shakes the Barley
- Angela’s Ashes
- Luck of the Irish (a Disney Channel movie from my youth haha)
Taste the rainbow
When in doubt, sit on your couch and eat Skittles. And hope hope hope that social distancing is over next year!
How are you celebrating St Patrick’s Day this year?
