Need to update the lighting in your home? Here are the biggest lighting trends for 2025 - from mixed metals, to organic shapes, to warm-toned light bulbs - there's a lot to consider!
Lighting is one of the most important elements of decor for your home. It's practical, of course, but it can also be super aesthetic. And honestly, getting the right lighting is so important for setting the tone of your space!
I personally prefer to have at least 3 light sources for each room. This might include:
- Overhead lights
- Large windows
- Table lamps
- Floor lamps
- Sconces/wall lamps
- Pendant lighting
- Recessed or can lights in the ceiling
- Under cabinet lighting
- Ambient lighting IE lights behind a tv, lights under a cabinet toe kick
Layering lighting gives you lots of options to adjust the lighting throughout the day, and creates a balanced look with plenty of light.
So, there are a lot of lighting options to consider! And, like any other decor item, lighting definitely has trends every year and season.
Here are some of the top lighting trends that we are currently seeing!
The top lighting trends for 2025
The top lighting trends include bold designs, mixed finishes and softer, more energy-efficient bulbs.
Bold overhead fixtures
Dramatic light fixtures are a bold choice - but they sure are trending!
The trick with bold design is to let it be the star it was made to be - and not compete for attention with other bold accents.
I like to choose 1 bold light fixture per space - whether that's a chandelier in your kitchen-dining area, a unique fan in your bedroom, or a funky floor lamp in the office.
Then, keep everything else simple with sleek, timeless designs and recessed lighting, can lights, or under cabinet lights.
Examples of bold light fixtures:
- Sputnik Chandelier
- Starburst Flush Mount Ceiling Light
- Bubble Ball Swirled Glass Chandelier
- Vintage hand blown glass pendant light
- Nova Modern Floor Lamp
- Fringed Table Lamp
Organic shapes
Organic shapes are shapes that reflect nature and are often a little unique and unexpected.
This trend goes hand in hand with bold light fixtures and is a great way to make your light fixtures stand out and feel really special.
Some examples of organic shaped light fixtures include:
- Boho Petal Hanging Pendant Light
- Wabi-Sabi Style Bird Nest Shape Lighting Fixture
- White Wave Ceramic Shade Pendant Light
- Hand-Woven Rattan Chandelier
- Modern U-Shape 2-Light Desk Table Lamp
- Arturesthome Desk Lamp
Mixing finishes
Say bye bye to matchy-matchy light fixtures and hello to mixed finished.
My personal rule when mixing metals is to have them appear at least 3 times in a room.
So, if you do gold pendant lights in your kitchen, pair it with gold cabinet knobs and a gold faucet.
If you want to add a matte black chandelier, also bring in a rug with black accents and black tile in your backsplash.
Having finishes appear at least 3 times makes them feel very purposeful and well-designed.
Examples in this image:
Soft lighting
Light fixtures are not the only element of selecting lighting for your home. You also have to choose light bulbs.
And, softer, warmer lighting is definitely trending.
Part of this is that LED light bulbs have really improved. Gone are the days of cold, blue LED light. They now come in much warmer, cozier shades!
Choosing your light bulbs carefully will mean a better ambiance - no matter which fixture you chose!
Smart lighting
Whatever lighting you choose, consider adding smart elements!
One fun thing you can do with smart lighting is set timers and routines.
This could be smart light bulbs or plugs - anything with the ability to set lighting on a schedule. Often, it has to connect to a "hub" such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Then, you can set lights to cut on and off, dim, or change colors at certain times!
We love using this feature for our outdoor lighting (and holiday decor!) But, it can also be helpful indoors.
For example, if you often get home after dark - use smart lighting to program a light to come on so you don't enter a dark house. This is more energy efficient than leaving a light on all work day while you are gone!
Speaking of energy efficient...
Energy efficient options
Of course, many people are trying to make their homes as energy efficient as possible, whether to save money or resources.
Luckily, there are lots of options for LED light bulbs and energy efficient fixtures.
Also, consider putting lights on a timer so they cut off if not used or after a certain amount of time. This is a great way to prevent waste!
