Since posting about our recycled glass oyster shell ECO counter tops in April, they (and our kitchen reveal) have quickly become the most popular posts on our site. Since we have now had them for six months, I wanted to check in and review how we are liking them and to answer some FAQ.
For all the details on why we chose them, where we got them, the cost and timeline, check out this post
How are we liking our recycled glass counter tops?
Is there a word stronger than love? I am obsessed with these counter tops. They are exactly my design aesthetic at this time in my life. Every day when I come downstairs or home from work, I smile a huge grin when I see this kitchen and know how majorly we transformed it!
What kind of maintenance do recycled glass counter tops require?
We have not had to do anything special. I wipe it normally with a damp cloth after dinner. That’s it! However, we will need to seal them after a year.
Have you had any staining?
We have not. The installers sealed the counter tops when they installed them and we were told to re-seal them once a year. We plan to do it in January, just because that’s an easy time to remember to do something annual!
To be fair about staining, we haven’t had any major dark colored stains or spills on them, but we cook a lot, and spill a lot, and just wipe it up. If a red sauce sat for hours it might stain – it’s a white counter top. We just don’t live that way!
Are the shells and glass falling out?
I get asked this a ton on this Facebook post and it makes me LOL. No, nothing has fallen out. They are concreted in there really securely.
Have the counter tops chipped, cracked, or scratched?
No they have not.
Do we have any regrets about our counter tops?
Honestly, I wish that we had gone for larger pieces of glass. This is totally on us because we selected the colors and sizes of each glass. The large pieces are just my favorite and add a lot of depth to the look. If we ever get them again (which I totally would in a new house) I’d go for larger glass pieces.

You mention having to seal them once a year. We have the same countertops and they did not mention this to us. What should we know about this?

Actually, I reached out to the manufacturer after one year and she said I didn't need to seal them. The installers said that we did need to seal them annually but they install countertops of all types and I guess that's just their general advice. Sorry for the confusion!
